My Experience

My Formative Years

I began teaching myself astrology in the summer of 1971.  While living in an ashram in southern California from 1973 – 1976, practicing and teaching kundalini yoga and meditation, I began reading charts professionally.  In 1975, I obtained a Master’s degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, and began integrating yogic philosophy and western psychology into my astrological practice.

Upon leaving the ashram in 1977, I moved to Florida, where I continued to study, write and teach, receiving certification as a professional astrologer from PAI (Professional Astrologers, Inc.) after passing their competency exam.  In 1978, I was introduced to the teachings of Swami Muktananda, and began to supplement my knowledge of kundalini yoga with the theory and practice of Siddha yoga.

My Early Writings

Over the next 15 years, I developed an international mail order astrology practice with clients from Canada, England, Germany, Japan, and Thailand, as well as the US.

During this time – from 1977 through 1992 – I wrote a series of monthly essays, called Full Moon Meditations, based on the astrological chart for the Full Moon, and shared them with a small subscriber base.  Many of these were reprinted and published elsewhere.  The first ten years of meditations were compiled and synthesized into my first book, The Birth of the Shining One: Moving Beyond Apocalypse Into Godbeing, published by Uni Sun, in Kansas City, MO in 1988.

My Early Teachings

In 1986, while living in Santa Fe, NM, I became involved with a group of western ceremonialists, integrating Native American teachings with movement and group psychotherapy.  Each year, at solstices and equinoxes, we would gather in the wilderness for 3 days of ceremony, ritual, and workshops, and in 1989, I began teaching at these events on a regular basis.

In 1993, I began offering a correspondence course – called The Eye of the Centaur – based on a correlation of astrological symbolism with observable experiences of everyday life, and for the next 8 years, worked intensively with a small number of dedicated students, willing to let the crucible of their own lives be their classroom.  Each year from 1998 – 2002, I facilitated a 4-day workshop for all the students in my course, oriented around common themes in my work with each of them.

My Mid Career Expansion

From 1993 to 1995, I studied medical astrology with Dr. Ingrid Naiman and received a certificate of competence.

Throughout the 1990s, I wrote numerous articles for The Mountain Astrologer, The International Astrologer and other publications, sharing insights I had evolved in the teaching of my correspondence course.

In 2001, I took a sabbatical from teaching to start my publishing company Ancient Tower Press, and to research and write my second book – The Seven Gates of Soul: Reclaiming the Poetry of Everyday Life – a 6000 year history of ideas about the soul, drawn from religion, philosophy, science, psychology and an intuitive form of astrology that I call astropoetics.

Tracking the Soul

After publishing Seven Gates in 2004, I wrote a third book, integrating astrology and yogic philosophy, called Tracking the Soul with an Astrology of Consciousness, which came out in 2007, and has since won numerous awards; as well as a fourth and fifth – a two-volume set exploring the integration of the spiritual psychology of Pythagorean number theory and astrology: Astrology and the Archetypal Power of Numbers, Part One (2011) and Part Two (2018).

In 2005, I resumed teaching my correspondence course, now transformed into The Astropoetic School of Soul Discovery.

From 2012 to 2018, I taught an annual workshop called Tracking the Soul, based on my book of the same name, but oriented toward non-astrologers.  As part of the preparation for the workshop, I would work intensively with each participant through a series of individual sessions exploring a particular pattern in their birthcharts.  Then in the workshop itself, I would develop group exercises and experiences around themes shared by individual participants.

My Present Day Reinvention

During this same period, after a 2011 vision quest in Grand Escalante Staircase in Utah, I worked collaboratively with a small group of teachers and healers to create and sponsor additional workshops, which we co-facilitated in various combinations from 2012 - 2o18.

Currently (in 2020), I am reorganizing my websites and course offerings, and working on a new book about the controversial relationship between astrology and science.
